Piers Morgan necks £4,300 vintage wine before 7am as he takes part in GMB taste test

Susanna Reid played curious bystander as co-host Piers Morgan necked expensive wine before 7am on Wednesday's edition of Good Morning Britain.

The tee-total presenter, 49, looked on as Piers, a self-confessed lover of fine wines, competed to win a vintage 1978 bottle of Pétrus, worth £4,300.

With the 54-year old attempting to discern the expensive red wine from a significantly cheaper alternative, Susanna – who gave up alcohol in 2018 – tried to guess correctly through their differing aromas.

Joining Piers, Charlotte Hawkins, Andi Peters and special guest Ashley Webb, an expert from boutique store Hedonism Wines, she announced: 'Look, I don't drink and I can tell the difference between the two.'

But Piers appeared to be less confident as he prepared to down wine just 45-minutes after going on air, telling the panel: 'I prefer French wine, so Italy and California are not my preferred. I'm putting in my excuses early, however let's have a go.'

Despite his initial uncertainty the divisive presenter's mind was quickly made up after rolling the wine around its glass and taking a small sip.

'OK I've made my decision,' he told them. 'This is the good stuff.'

With Ashley conceding the presenter had guessed correctly, the costly bottle of Pétrus was promptly handed to an incredulous Piers, who admitted it would be consumed with the respect it deserves.

Raising the bottle, he announced: 'To my brother Jeremy, who's watching. He's an army Colonel, just back for a few days from Cyprus, where he's out there doing lots of stuff. He'll be back there for Christmas. We're gonna have this, this week.'

While Susanna and Charlotte played no part in the tasting, they were also rewarded with individual bottles of 2002 vintage champagne.

'Thank you very much, my family will be very appreciative,’ Susanna announced after accepting the bottle, another reference to her ongoing sobriety.

Speaking in September 2018, the presenter explained that she had lost a stone in weight after doctor’s revealed she had a ‘top heavy BMI.’

Talking on Good Morning Britain she said: ‘It was a combination of factors, but a doctor said I was at the top end of my BMI. He said it might benefit me if I lost a little weight.’

Susanna revealed that she acted on tips given to her by boxer Tyson Fury, who advised eliminating milk from her coffee.

But reflecting on her sobriety just two months later, Susanna – who lost more than a stone in weight after giving up alcohol – told the Is It Just Me? podcast: ‘I really miss it. When you are in a big social group and the shots come out, I miss letting my hair down.’

She added: ‘When you cut alcohol out that is an easy couple of pounds. As you get older your memory is affected. I just thought “alcohol is not great for your memory.”‘
